Osmanthus fragrans, also known as Sweet Osmanthus or Fragrant Olive, is a horticultural variety of Osmanthus. It is named for its continuous blooming and intense fragrance. It is an evergreen shrub with multiple branches and short internodes. The leaves are smooth, green in color, and usually have glandular dots on both sides. They have petioles (leaf stems) and few or no serrations along the leaf edges.

The flowers of Osmanthus fragrans are bisexual, and the plant may have separate male and female individuals or separate male, female, and bisexual flowers. The flowers are arranged in clusters in the leaf axils and have small, short, conical inflorescences at the top. There are usually two bracts at the base, fused together. The calyx is bell-shaped and four-lobed, while the corolla is white or yellowish-white, shaped like a bell, cylinder, or jar, with four petals. The flower buds are arranged in overlapping scales. The two stamens are attached to the upper part of the corolla tube, and the connective extends to form a small pointed tip. The ovary has two chambers, each containing two hanging ovules. The style may be longer or shorter than the ovary, and the stigma is capitate or shallowly divided. There may also be sterile pistils in a diamond or conical shape.

The fruit of Osmanthus fragrans is a drupe, usually ovoid or obliquely elliptical, with a hard or bony inner pericarp. It typically contains one seed, with fleshy endosperm and flattened cotyledons. The radicle points upwards. The chromosome base number is X=23.

Osmanthus fragrans is highly prized for its exquisite fragrance, which is refreshing and captivating. One remarkable characteristic is that the flower stems emerge from the green leaves, allowing the plant to produce flowers throughout the year. The type specimen and mother tree are currently preserved in Dongxi Township, Cangxi County, with an estimated age of 100 years. The tree is approximately 6 meters tall, with a diameter at breast height of 22 centimeters and a crown width of 5.8 meters. It is distributed in northeastern and northern China, as well as in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan provinces.
